Excess body fat converts testosterone into oestrogen and raises scrotal temperature, both of which lower sperm production. At the other extreme, being underweight can suppress the hormones that signal the testes to produce sperm at all.
Hormone balance, a healthy weight supports the testosterone, FSH and LH levels sperm production depends on.
Scrotal temperature, excess abdominal and groin fat can raise local heat, which harms motility.
It's reversible, even modest, sustained weight change can improve parameters over a sperm cycle.

Important: BMI is a rough guide. It doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, so very muscular men may read as “overweight” without the fertility risk. Treat it as one input among many, and discuss significant results with a clinician.
